That exact feeling is what inspired my brand-new Songbird Collection.
Whether you are an avid backyard birder, a dedicated member of the Audubon community, or a frequent shopper at your local Wild Birds Unlimited store, this collection was created to bring that porch-side peace right into your home.
The Style: Scientific Illustration Meets Loose Watercolor
If you loved my state wildflower series, you will feel right at home with these feathered friends. Since I was a kid, I’ve always been captivated by vintage scientific illustrations and ornithology art. There is something so beautiful about capturing the true essence of a species.
For the Songbird Collection, I wanted to blend that detailed, archival feel with my own style. Each piece was created using vibrant watercolors paired with crisp, defined black India ink outlining. The result is a balance of structured scientific form and loose, expressive fluidity that makes up each bird.
I chose nine of the most beloved North American backyard birds for this collection: American Robin, Baltimore Oriole, Eastern Bluebird, House Finch, Indigo Bunting, Mockingbird, Northern Cardinal, Western Meadowlark and the Wood Thrush.
A Personal Note: The Meaning of the Cardinal
While I love every single piece in this collection, the Northern Cardinal holds a deeply special place in my heart. Growing up, we had them in abundance, and today, they frequently visit the feeders outside my own window.
To me—and to so many bird lovers—Cardinals are more than just a flash of brilliant red. They are gentle, comforting reminders of loved ones who have passed on, as well as a celebration of the loved ones who are still here with us today. It’s a piece filled with memory, love, and connection.
