Art print size guide with framed artworks on a wall above a sofa, featuring Amanda Klein Co.

One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “What size should I order?” And it’s a fair question. Art is personal, and the size you choose can completely change how a piece feels once it’s in your home or office.

Whether you’re filling a blank wall, adding something meaningful to a small space, or choosing a gift for someone you love, thinking through scale and placement can help you feel confident in your choice. Below is a simple way to think about each print size and where it tends to work best.

5" x 7" Prints

This is my favorite size for pieces that are meant to feel intimate and sentimental. A 5" x 7" print doesn’t take over a space, but it invites you to come closer. It works beautifully on bookshelves, nightstands, desks, or layered into a gallery wall. These are the pieces you notice in quiet moments.

For gifting, this size is especially meaningful. It’s perfect for a new baby or nursery, sympathy or remembrance gifts, Mother’s Day, or a thoughtful just-because gesture. If you’re pairing a piece with a handwritten note or giving something deeply personal, this size often feels just right.

8" x 10" Prints

An 8" x 10" is a classic size that works in almost any home. It’s large enough to stand on its own but still easy to place without a lot of planning. This size fits nicely in bedrooms, small wall spaces, entryways, or offices, especially near a desk or reading nook.

When it comes to gifting, this is one of the most versatile options. It’s a great choice for housewarming gifts, new apartments, teacher gifts, family gifts, or Mother’s Day. If you’re unsure what size to choose and want something that feels thoughtful but not overwhelming, this is usually a safe and loved option.

11" x 14" Prints

This size is where artwork really begins to anchor a space. An 11" x 14" print feels intentional and finished, especially when framed. It works well in hallways, above desks or console tables, in bedrooms, or in offices and studios where you want the art to have a little more presence.

For gifting, this size is ideal for bigger life moments. Wedding gifts, anniversaries, meaningful family pieces, or artwork meant to mark a season of life all work beautifully at this scale. It feels substantial without overpowering a room.

16" x 20" Prints

A 16" x 20" print is designed to be noticed. This size brings impact and helps set the tone of a room. It’s best suited for living rooms, entryways, large bedroom walls, above a sofa or sideboard, or in creative studios and offices where art plays a central role.

This size makes a memorable gift for major milestones. New homes, family legacy pieces, or moments when you want to truly surprise someone all lend themselves well to a larger print. When a piece holds deep meaning, giving it space to breathe on the wall can make it even more powerful.

A Few Final Tips

  • When in doubt, go slightly larger. Most people wish they had sized up.

  • Think about the wall, not just the frame. Empty wall space matters.

  • Sentimental gifts don’t need to be big. Emotional weight often matters more than scale.

  • Gallery walls love variety. Mixing sizes adds warmth and personality.

Art should feel good and personal, not stressful. Trust your instincts, think about how the piece will live in the space, and remember that the right size is the one that feels right for you or for the person you’re gifting it to.
